We spent twelve years building WordPress websites before we built any hosting — blogs, micro-niche sites, WooCommerce stores, online tools. In that time we paid for a lot of hosting, and the pattern was always the same: fast for a month, slow by the third, and a support reply that had clearly not read the message.
The reason was never a secret. Shared hosting is sold by the account and the marginal account is nearly free to sell, so the machine keeps filling until the complaints outweigh the revenue. Nobody is being dishonest. It is just what the incentive does.
HostCrafter is what happens if you decide not to. We cap how many websites go on a server and then stop selling it — and because we have no ad budget to pay for, the money that would have gone there buys the next machine instead.
What we are actually trying to do
One sentence: make a genuinely fast, genuinely healthy WordPress site the cheapest and easiest thing you can buy — not the most expensive.
Most of this industry treats those as opposites. Cheap hosting is slow and you are expected to accept it. Fast hosting is priced per visit and billed like enterprise software. We think that gap is a pricing decision rather than a technical one, and closing it is the whole company. Three things follow from it:
- Affordable, without the asterisk. The price you renew at is the price you meant to pay. Speed is not an add-on, and neither are backups, staging, SSL, email or object caching — they are on the plan you already bought.
- Fast because of how it is built, not because of a badge. Every plan's CPU, memory and disk are real kernel limits, so the server cannot be quietly oversold underneath you. That is the only version of “fast hosting” that is still true in month six.
- Easy enough that you do not need us. Install WordPress, take a staging copy, restore a backup, change PHP version, add a mailbox, get an SSL certificate — each is one click in our own panel, and none of them requires opening a ticket or learning cPanel.
A healthy WordPress site is the actual target. Fast pages, current core and plugins, a backup you have tested, a certificate that renews itself, mail that arrives, and nothing quietly broken. The panel is built to show you all of that on one screen, because a site you cannot see the state of is a site you will find out about from a customer.
What we chose to build
Our own panel
Rather than cPanel. It does what WordPress needs — install, staging, backups, mail, SSL, PHP version, updates, security — and nothing it does not.
Our own node software
Every server runs an agent we wrote. Adding a server is one command, and every account on it is rebuilt to match the current rules each time it starts.
Our own limits, enforced by the kernel
Every plan's CPU, memory and disk are cgroup limits and a real quota on the filesystem — not a fair-use paragraph somebody reads out to you after your site has slowed down.
Where we are now
We are small, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. What that buys you is that the person answering your chat message is the person who built the thing you are asking about.
It also means we say no to things. We do not host adult content or gambling, we cap our servers instead of filling them, and we will tell you when we are not the right host for what you are doing. The acceptable use policy is the honest version of that list.
